Couchsurfing is completely free but this is not the motivation of most members who are seeking a more authentic way of travel.
Couchsurfers are a very friendly lot. I was once approached in the high street of my local town by a couchsurfer from Kazakhstan who recognised my photograph from my online profile. She was looking for someone she could relate to.
Although I have never couchsurfed or hosted I have attended a couchsurfing social in London. What a wonderful positive bunch of people! Each was living the dream in their own way.
Feminism and political correctness are manifestations of fear. Fear of saying the wrong thing, fear of men and 'bad' thoughts. Positive outgoing people who are doing things do not have time for narrow thinking. Anything that makes people happier and more outgoing should be supported for this reason.
This is why I support Couchsurfing.org with a verified membership. Normally membership is free but some people wish to donate a few pounds and get verified.
Verified status proves two things. Firstly it indicates that the member has donated to the cause. Secondly it (sort of) proves he is who he says he is. This is done by making a donation using a credit card and then receiving a postcard sent to a home address. The postcard contains a number that is then fed into the Couchsurfing website as proof of address.
I will host some time this year.
